Lagosians And Their Landlords: Who Needs To Be Fair

Photo of Tenants protesting against their Landlord
Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria with its financial promise has attracted many into its clan of residency. This happenstance in turn has resulted into an in-flow of prosperity and goodwill in many people's lives and businesses and no doubts, house owners and property developers.*File For a very long time,Lagosians have cried out in different capacities due to how high they have to pay for rent as tenants in this big burstling mega city while the landlords in the state also are not left behind in the series of complains that Lagosians over-reacts when it comes to paying their rents.

According to Oyebolu Abiola, a Computer Scientist who is a bachelor and also a Lagos resident; the cost of renting an apartment in Lagos is alarming and highly exorbitant. "The same amount of money that can be used in renting a three bedroom apartment for one year, plus the agent's fee can conveniently buy a land in some other parts of the country and even start up work on the said land" Abiola added.

Abiola also argued that aside from the huge amount of rent, many landlords even demand for 2/3years upfront rent which is against the tenancy law. It is almost funny how even before the rent expires, they are back knocking at the tenant's door with a 100% increment in the rent; the bachelor reiterated.

Mr Sodeke, a house owner in Lagos is of the opinion that tenants do not know what most landlords went through before being able to build their houses. He also thinks tenants overreact blindly when it comes to paying their house rents. When asked if he can pay the same amount he is charging his tenants as rent, his reply was: "why not?, at least building the house is not enough, you also have to maintain it so that the house can be in a good condition forever!"

Dear Lagosians,is it true that you don't put your landlords into consideration when paying rents is concerned?Do you think your landlords also deserve an applause for making accommodation available for you?
